The Home of Goryeo Ginseng, Geumsan: The History, Present, and Future Strategy of a 1,500-Year Agricultural Heritage

E.C. Lee / SIMTEA.com

1. Geumsan, the Home of Goryeo Ginseng

Geumsan County, located in Chungcheongnam-do, is known as the home of Goryeo ginseng, a representative specialty of South Korea with a rich cultivation history spanning 1,500 years.1 Geumsan's ginseng is more than just a crop; it has functioned as a key icon symbolizing the history, diplomacy, and culture of the Korean Peninsula. Recognizing its unparalleled value, Geumsan's traditional ginseng farming system was designated as a Korea's Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage item in 2015. In 2018, it achieved the milestone of being the world's first ginseng crop to be listed as a 'Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS)' by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).1

This GIAHS designation is profoundly significant as it recognizes not only the 'product' of Geumsan ginseng but also the sustainability of the 'system' itself, specifically Geumsan's unique 'Hae-garim (sun-shading) farming method' and 'circulating rotational farming'.3 The circulating rotational farming method involves leaving land fallow for 10 to 15 years after a single ginseng cultivation or rotating it with other crops, naturally restoring soil fertility without reliance on chemical fertilizers.3 This signifies that Geumsan is not merely a 'ginseng production area' but a 'global standard for sustainable agricultural heritage'.

This report aims to examine the 1,500-year historical authenticity of Geumsan ginseng through literature and folklore, and to objectively analyze its quality excellence through geographical environment and modern scientific analysis. Furthermore, it will diagnose the current industrial structure that functions as the heart of ginseng distribution in South Korea, and shed light on the cultural and economic ripple effects of the Geumsan World Ginseng Festival and innovation cases through R&D. Finally, it aims to analyze the immediate challenges of climate change and limitations in the distribution structure to propose sustainable future strategies for the Geumsan ginseng industry.

2. The Historical Origin and Authenticity of Geumsan Ginseng

The authenticity of Geumsan ginseng has been established through the intersection of historical facts spanning 1,500 years and cultural narratives rooted in the lives of the people.

2.1. Origin in Literature: The Baekje Era and Chinese Records

The history of Geumsan ginseng dates back 1,500 years to the Baekje era.1 This is not a mere estimation but is based on historical facts recorded in the history of East Asian exchange. The Sejong Sillok Jiriji (Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong) states, "They knew the efficacy of ginseng before the Baekje era and presented it as a tribute to the Liang dynasty" 1, and the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) provides a specific diplomatic record that Baekje sent ginseng as a gift to the Liang dynasty in China in 512 AD (12th year of King Muryeong).4

In the same era, the renowned medical texts Shennong Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu (Collected Annotations on the Classic of Shennong's Materia Medica) and Mingyi Bielu (Miscellaneous Records of Famous Physicians), written by Tao Hongjing (452-536) of the Chinese Liang dynasty, also introduce the morphological characteristics and excellent quality of Baekje ginseng in detail.4 This clearly shows that from the Three Kingdoms period, ginseng functioned not just as a medicinal herb but as an important diplomatic asset and strategic trade item for the state. Therefore, the 1,500-year history of Geumsan ginseng holds firm authenticity, verified within the macro-context of East Asian exchange history.

2.2. 'Gaesamteo' and the Legend of Kang Cheosa: The Cultural Beginning of Ginseng Cultivation

Along with strict literary records, Geumsan has passed down the 'Legend of Kang Cheosa', which tells of the cultural origin of ginseng cultivation.1 About 1,500 years ago, a scholar with the surname Kang (Kang Cheosa), who lived in Geumsan, prayed for 100 days in the Gwaneumgul Cave of Jinaksan Mountain for his ailing mother's recovery.4 On the last day of his prayer, the mountain spirit appeared in his dream and gave him a revelation: "Go to the cliff of Gwaneumbong Peak, and you will find a plant with three red berries. Brew its root and give it to your mother".4

As Kang Cheosa followed the revelation, dug up the root, and brewed it for his mother, her illness was completely cured. Afterward, Kang Cheosa planted its seeds in 'Gaean-i Village' in present-day Seonggok-ri, Nami-myeon, Geumsan-gun, and this place came to be called 'Gaesamteo' (開蔘터), meaning 'the site where ginseng was first started'.1 This legend imbued Geumsan ginseng not only with the medicinal value of 'health' but also with the powerful cultural value of 'filial piety'. This narrative does not remain just an old story; it is vividly inherited to this day through the physical space of 'Gaesamteo' (where 'Gaesamgak' Pavilion now stands) and the solemn ritual of 'Gaesamje' (Ginseng Opening Rite), which marks the beginning of the Geumsan Ginseng Festival every year.1

2.3. Development as a Joseon Dynasty Tribute and Processing Methods

Entering the Joseon Dynasty, Geumsan emerged as a center for the commercial distribution and processing of ginseng. Records from that time show unique processing techniques specific to the Geumsan region, optimized for long-distance distribution.7

According to the records, in Geumsan, Jeolla-do, ginseng was not peeled but washed with water and then dried in the shade for 1-2 days.7 When the ginseng was appropriately dried to the point where it would bend but not break, the fibrous roots (fine roots) were removed, the lower part (leg part) was bent, tied with 'wang-gol' (rush), and dried in the sun. The rush was then removed before distribution.7

This unique processing method of tying with rush to fix the shape was "a method devised to prevent the small roots from breaking during long-distance transportation".7 This has very important implications: it proves that even during the Joseon Dynasty, Geumsan was not a place of self-consumption but a 'center of commercial distribution' supplying goods to Hanyang (Seoul) and other parts of the country, and that it possessed advanced 'processing and logistics technology' to preserve the value of the product. This historical DNA is directly linked to Geumsan's current status, controlling 80% of the nation's ginseng distribution.

3. The Uniqueness of Geumsan Ginseng: Geography, Environment, and Components

The reputation of Geumsan ginseng stems not only from its 1,500-year history but also from its scientifically proven, unparalleled quality. This is the result of Geumsan's geographical environment, the traditional farming methods developed within it, and the resulting superior component content.

3.1. A God-Given Cultivation Environment: Harmony of Basin Terrain and Climate

Geographically, Geumsan possesses heavenly conditions that can be called the 'optimal location' for ginseng cultivation. It is characterized by a typical basin terrain surrounded by mountains with altitudes of 400-700m.4 To the west, Jinaksan and Daedunsan mountains act as a folding screen, resulting in many days of frost and creating the large diurnal temperature range (daily temperature difference) typical of a basin.4

Ginseng is inherently a perennial plant that prefers semi-shaded conditions, well-drained sandy loam soil, and a cool climate.4 Geumsan's terrain, soil, and cool climate create the optimal environment for ginseng to grow.4 Combined with the sustainable traditional methods of 'Hae-garim (sun-shading) farming' and the 'circulating rotational farming' 3, which restores soil fertility through 10-15 years of fallowing (both registered as GIAHS), high-quality ginseng is produced.

3.2. Morphological and Physical Characteristics of Geumsan Ginseng ('Summer Ginseng')

This unique and somewhat harsh climatic environment of Geumsan has shaped the distinct morphological characteristics of Geumsan ginseng. Compared to ginseng from other regions, the main root (body) may be relatively small, but its tissue is extremely firm and dense.1 It is also characterized by a clear and clean, pure white color.1

The traditional assessment of 'small but hard' aligns precisely with modern scientific analysis. A study supporting this found that 4-year-old Geumsan ginseng has "higher density with no empty spaces in the tissue" compared to 6-year-old ginseng.10

Furthermore, Geumsan ginseng is harvested and processed from early July to late October, when its medicinal properties are at their peak, earning it the name 'summer ginseng'.8 This suggests that the quality of ginseng is determined not simply by the number of years of cultivation, but by the density of the tissue grown in an optimal environment, the concentration of components, and the optimal harvest time.

3.3. Scientific Superiority: Saponin (Ginsenoside) Comparative Analysis with Other Regions

The superiority of Geumsan ginseng is scientifically and clearly proven through a comparative analysis of its key pharmacological component, 'saponin' (ginsenoside).

'A Study on the Component Comparison of Geumsan Ginseng' conducted by Professor Ko Seong-gwon of Chung-Ang University compared the main components of 4-year-old ginseng from six major ginseng-producing areas in Korea, including Geumsan.10 The results of this study show how outstanding Geumsan's 4-year-old ginseng is in terms of components, contrary to the common market perception (preference for 6-year-old).10

The main research results are as follows 10:

  • Total Saponin: Based on 4-year-old ginseng, Geumsan ginseng recorded the highest content at 1.35% compared to other production areas.

  • Ginsenoside Rb1 (Central nervous system sedation, blood pressure strengthening effect): Geumsan 0.392% (Highest content)

  • Ginsenoside Rg1 (Anti-fatigue, brain function improvement effect): Geumsan 0.125% (Highest content)

  • Ginsenoside Rf (Analgesic effect): Geumsan 0.028% (Highest content)

What is particularly noteworthy is the Ginsenoside Rf component. This component is completely absent in Western ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) produced in places like the United States or Canada 10, making it a key chemical marker that proves the uniqueness of Goryeo ginseng, including Geumsan ginseng.

Furthermore, another study confirmed the international quality superiority of Geumsan ginseng, showing that the ginsenoside content of fresh Geumsan ginseng was higher compared to fresh ginseng from major cultivation areas in Northeast Asia, such as Jilin Province in China and Nagano in Japan.11

3.4. The Perspective of Traditional Medicine: The Efficacy of Ginseng in Donguibogam

Hundreds of years before modern science analyzed the components of ginseng, the Donguibogam (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine), the essence of traditional medicine, had already deeply discerned the efficacy of ginseng.

According to the Donguibogam, ginseng was primarily seen as a key medicinal herb for restoring vitality, described as "strengthening the lung qi (Pulmonary energy) to generate energy".12

Even more noteworthy is the detailed description of its mental effects. Ginseng "stabilizes the spirit (Jing-Shen) and the 'Hon-Baek' (soul)".12 It also specifies that it "stops 'Gyeong-gye' (fright and palpitations), opens the heart to make one wise, and eliminates forgetfulness (Geon-mang)".12

The efficacy of "eliminating forgetfulness (Geon-mang)" observed hundreds of years ago in the Donguibogam precisely matches 'memory improvement' 14, one of the six major functionalities of ginseng officially recognized by the modern Ministry of Food and Drug Safety through scientific clinical trials. This is powerful evidence that the efficacy of ginseng has been consistently proven across eras, in both traditional medicine and modern science.

4. Geumsan Ginseng 'Today': The Heart of Korea's Ginseng Industry

With a 1,500-year history, Geumsan ginseng now serves as the undisputed 'heart' of the Korean ginseng industry. However, its identity holds a unique industrial position not as the 'largest producer' but as the 'largest distribution hub'.

4.1. Beyond Production, a 'Distribution' Hub: Industrial Status Seen Through Statistics

Due to the title 'Home of Ginseng', it is easy to misunderstand that Geumsan is the nation's largest 'producer' of ginseng. However, statistics show the exact opposite. As of 2012, Geumsan County's ginseng cultivation area was 635ha, only 3.9% of the national total (16,174ha), and its production (harvest volume) was also 1,160 tons, just 4.5% of the national total (26,057 tons).6

But Geumsan's true power comes from 'distribution', not 'production'. Geumsan is a massive 'commercial hub' where ginseng produced from all over the country gathers, prices are set, and it spreads again to the nation and the world.

Geumsan's markets account for 70-80% of the national distribution of 'Baeksam' (white dried ginseng) and 80% of the distribution of 'Susam' (fresh ginseng).2 This means that 8 out of 10 ginseng roots distributed in South Korea pass through Geumsan, implying that Geumsan is the standard for the Korean ginseng market and holds the price-setting power. This is the modern maximization of the historical DNA as a center for processing and distribution technology from the Joseon Dynasty, as confirmed in Chapter 2.

4.2. Major Market Function Analysis: Geumsan International Ginseng Market, Susam Center, and Herbal Medicine Market

Geumsan's overwhelming distribution share is manifested through highly specialized markets.2

  • Geumsan International Ginseng Market: Opened in 1986 as a commercial building-type market 15, it is the 'gathering place for Baeksam', with 70-80% of the nation's white dried ginseng being distributed here.2 About 190 stores are concentrated in this market.6

  • Geumsan Susam Center: This is the largest domestic market specializing in fresh ginseng (Susam), where 80% of the nation's fresh ginseng is traded.6 It handles a massive volume, with an average daily transaction of about 150 tons.6

  • Geumsan Ginseng Herbal Medicine Market: This is the largest herbal medicine market in the central region, where not only ginseng but also an average of 300 types of herbal medicines are professionally traded.2

In addition, the Geumsan Ginseng Nonghyup Susam Land (direct trade) 6, where producers participate as members, and the Geumsan Ginseng Shopping Center 6 meticulously support Geumsan's distribution network.

4.3. Quality Certification and Management System (G-Mark, GAP)

As the hub responsible for 80% of national distribution, Geumsan's biggest task is 'trust'. Guaranteeing and standardizing the quality of ginseng gathered from all over the country is a matter of life and death for the Geumsan market.

However, there is internal and external criticism that the current distribution system is "unsystematic," "facilities are outdated," and the distribution process is "opaque".17

In response, Geumsan County is strengthening its own quality management system.

  1. Geumsan County 'G-Mark': This is a quality certification system for agricultural and specialty products, certified by the Geumsan County Mayor. As of August 2025, 20 products, including red ginseng concentrate, have received this certification.19

  2. GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) Certification: For the safe distribution of ginseng, the operation of GAP-certified joint sorting facilities, which was previously concentrated in the fall, has been expanded to the spring 20, laying the foundation for the year-round distribution of high-quality, safe ginseng.

These G-Mark and GAP certification systems are fulfilling the responsibilities of a distribution hub and are becoming an essential foundation for advancing the distribution structure, such as the introduction of a 'public auction system' in the future.18

5. The Convergence of Industry and Culture: Geumsan World Ginseng Festival Analysis

When discussing the present of Geumsan, the 'Geumsan World Ginseng Festival' is not just a simple event but the most powerful 'industrial policy tool' and 'cultural platform' driving the Geumsan ginseng industry.

5.1. Origin and Development of the Festival: From a Local Festival to an Industry-Oriented International Event

The Geumsan Ginseng Festival began in 1981 as a local festival for residents called the 'Geumsan Ginseng' (Insamje), led by the directors of the Geumsan Cultural Center.21

Later, in 1996, the nature of the festival began to change with the goal of revitalizing the local economy in accordance with the government's cultural tourism festival policy.21 The decisive turning point was the start of the '1st International Ginseng Trade Fair' in 1999.21 With this as a starting point, the Geumsan Ginseng Festival broke away from being a simple local cultural festival and firmly established itself as an 'industry-oriented cultural tourism festival' where domestic sales (B2C) and international trade (B2B) take place simultaneously.

As a result, it has grown into a festival that truly represents South Korea, being selected 10 times as the nation's best festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.23

5.2. Economic Ripple Effect and Global Performance of the Festival

The Geumsan World Ginseng Festival, as a massive 'domestic stimulus event' and 'export consultation fair' wrapped in a cultural guise, generates enormous economic results.

The achievements of the '42nd Geumsan World Ginseng Festival' held in 2024 overwhelmingly prove this 24:

  • A total of 1,156,000 visitors came to the festival site during the 11-day festival period.24

  • Among them, foreign visitors, attracted through enhanced overseas promotion, numbered about 10,000.25

  • The estimated economic ripple effect on the local economy reached 136.6 billion KRW.24

  • As a B2B achievement through the 'International Ginseng Trade Fair', it recorded export consultation performance of about 15 million USD.24

These figures show that the festival is the most powerful industrial policy tool, where 1.15 million visitors directly experience the brand value of Geumsan ginseng and are converted into potential customers, while practical domestic sales and export contracts are simultaneously concluded.

5.3. Diversification of Festival Programs and Cultural Significance

The festival's phenomenal success is due to the power of its programs, which combine 1,500 years of tradition with modern entertainment.

  • Tradition and Experience: The 'Ginseng Harvesting Experience' 23, which boasts the highest popularity every year, provides a special experience for tourists to harvest ginseng directly from the ginseng fields. In addition, the 'Gaesamje' (Opening Rite) 6, 'Ginseng Market Street' 23, and the 'Health Experience Hall' 23 featuring red ginseng foot baths and massages allow visitors to feel traditional values with all five senses.

  • Industry and Food: While the 'International Ginseng Trade Fair' 23 serves as the center for B2B, 'Baek Jong-won's Geumsan Ginseng Food Corner' 23, the famous 'Fried Ginseng' 2, and 'Geumsan Premium Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup)' 23 capture the taste buds of visitors.

  • Modern Elements: The festival is successfully attracting children, families, and teenagers by incorporating 'Future Robot Hall' 23 featuring AI and robot technology, 'K-Insam Power Drone Hall' 27, and performances by popular singers targeting the MZ generation.23

6. Innovation for the Future: R&D, New Product Development, and Current Challenges

Geumsan ginseng, which has continued its 1,500-year history, is not content with its current status as a distribution hub but is preparing to leap forward as a future industry through R&D and new product development. At the same time, it faces significant challenges such as climate change and limitations in its distribution structure.

6.1. The Forefront of Geumsan Ginseng R&D: Geumsan International Ginseng & Herb Research Institute

Geumsan County is leading the scientific verification of Geumsan ginseng's efficacy and its industrialization through the (Foundation) Geumsan International Ginseng & Herb Research Institute 28 and the (Foundation) Geumsan Ginseng & Herb Industry Promotion Institute 29 as its two main pillars. This is a key strategy to transform Geumsan ginseng from a simple 'primary agricultural product' into a high-value-added 'functional ingredient' and 'bio-product'.

6.2. Key Achievements: Malonyl Ginsenoside and New Material Development

Geumsan's R&D strategy is particularly noteworthy for establishing a clear 'Science-to-Market' pipeline. The case selected as one of the 'Top 54 Excellent R&D Achievements in Agriculture and Food' in 2020 29 concisely shows this process.

  1. The Geumsan Ginseng & Herb Industry Promotion Institute was the first in Korea to isolate 'Malonyl Ginsenoside' as a unique characteristic component of Goryeo ginseng (Geumsan ginseng) through comparative analysis with foreign ginseng such as Hwagi-sam (American ginseng) and developed an analysis method.29

  2. By standardizing this characteristic component (Malonyl Ginsenoside), they developed a new functional material 'GS-KG9'.28 Through animal experiments and human application tests, they scientifically verified its 'liver function improvement' effect and obtained individual recognition from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.28

  3. Using this GS-KG9 material, they developed a finished product called 'Hwalsamjin'.29

  4. To target the Chinese market, they conducted international human application tests on Chinese subjects to prove its efficacy.29 Through the collaborating institution, Daedong Goryeo Sam Co., Ltd., they successfully concluded an export contract for 'Hwalsamjin' with a Chinese company, valued at about 2 billion KRW over 5 years.29

This is a model case of R&D innovation that discovered 'Geumsan's unique component', turned it into an 'exclusive functional material', developed it into a 'finished product', and successfully 'exported' it.

6.3. High-Value Product Research Trends, Including Black Ginseng

Geumsan's R&D does not stop at red ginseng but is pioneering new markets by diversifying processing methods, such as 'Black Ginseng'.33

  • Black Ginseng Research Achievements: The Promotion Institute's research results have identified that black ginseng is effective in preventing osteoporosis and promoting bone formation.33 This is gathering significant attention, especially in the functional ingredient market for elderly health management, and 10 patents have been published for related research.33

  • Consumer-Centric New Product Development: To overcome the consumption limitations centered on fried ginseng 2, a popular festival menu item, the county is actively promoting the development of specialized menus such as ginseng desserts, beverages, bakery items, and ready-to-eat meals targeting various consumer groups, including the MZ generation.33

  • Support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs): A new product development support program is in operation, providing up to 30 million KRW per company to SMEs that have the technology but lack capital. This support covers material convergence, recipe development, and improvements in packaging and design.31

6.4. Current Challenges: Climate Change, Distribution Opacity, and Cultivation Area Decline

Geumsan ginseng, with its 1,500-year history, also faces significant challenges that threaten its sustainability.

  1. Climate Change: High-temperature phenomena in summer due to global warming are fatal to ginseng cultivation. If temperatures of 30°C or higher persist for more than a week, 'high-temperature damage' occurs, where the edges of the ginseng leaves burn, and in severe cases, growth stops.35 This is a factor that threatens the foundation of the traditional cultivation method certified by GIAHS.

  2. Weakening Cultivation Base: The industrial base is shrinking, with the national ginseng cultivation area decreasing by 23% over the past 8 years.36 Geumsan is also experiencing a weakening of its cultivation base due to decreased ginseng consumption, price drops, and sluggish exports.37

  3. Limitations of the Distribution Structure: Geumsan's greatest strength and weakness is 'distribution'. Despite occupying 80% of the market 6, criticism is raised that the system is "unsystematic" and "Susam market facilities are outdated".17 The current complex and opaque distribution system hinders fair price formation and causes a lack of business-mindedness among distribution participants 17, requiring fundamental systemic improvement.

7. Suggestions for the Sustainability of Geumsan Ginseng

For Geumsan ginseng to leap forward as a future global industry beyond its 1,500-year history, an innovative strategy is needed to transform its 'Heritage' into a 'Digital Platform' and to converge 'Tradition' with 'Technology'.

7.1. Digital Transformation: Building a Smart Farm and Distribution Information System

The key challenges Geumsan currently faces (climate change, opaque distribution) all stem from the limitations of traditional methods. Geumsan County's future strategy for this is focused on 'digitalization' and 'modernization'.37

  • Modernization of Cultivation (Climate Change Response): In addition to the traditional 'Hae-garim' (sun-shading) farming method 3, the introduction of 'smart farms' and automation of production methods are being emphasized as future strategies to respond to climate change.37

  • Transparency in Distribution (Distribution Structure Improvement): To improve the opaque distribution structure pointed out in 4.3 17, establishing a 'digital-based distribution information system', i.e., 'computerization of distribution data', is being pursued as an urgent task.30

This is already materializing through the reorganization of the 'Ginseng-tong' website 30, evolving from a simple promotional site into a 'digital industrial platform' that producers, distributors, and consumers can all utilize. In the future, Geumsan's key survival strategy will be to secure distribution transparency by linking this platform with a 'Safe Ginseng Distribution Real-Name System' (Smart QR) 30 and introducing a 'public auction system'.18

7.2. Global K-Ginseng Strategy and Market Diversification

The future Geumsan must become a forward base for exporting high-value-added 'materials' and 'finished products', not just a raw material export base. Based on the R&D achievements of 'Malonyl Ginsenoside (GS-KG9)' 29 and 'Black Ginseng' 33 analyzed in 6.2, ginseng must be positioned as a functional food and medicinal material, not just a medicinal herb.

By strengthening the international status of the Geumsan World Ginseng Festival 25, diversifying B2B export channels, pioneering overseas markets such as the United States 37, and providing customized, phased support for export companies 38, Geumsan must lead the future of 'Global K-Ginseng'.39

7.3. Policy Suggestions for the Modern Succession of a 1,500-Year Heritage

The ultimate vision for Geumsan ginseng lies in the 'harmony of tradition and future'.39 To this end, the following 'Two-track' strategy is required.

  1. Track 1 (Heritage): Traditional farming methods, such as the 'circulating rotational farming' 3 registered as GIAHS, must be preserved and inherited as they are, utilized as a unique tourism resource and cultural heritage that only Geumsan possesses.

  2. Track 2 (Technology): In the commercial production and distribution sectors, 'smart farms' 37, 'digital distribution platforms' 30, and 'R&D-based new materials' 29 and other modern technologies must be boldly introduced to maximize efficiency and competitiveness.

By converging R&D (science), distribution (industry), festival (culture), and GIAHS (heritage) under the keyword 'ginseng', Geumsan can inherit the tradition of being a diplomatic asset of Baekje 1,500 years ago and firmly establish itself as the 'control tower of the global K-Ginseng industry' in the 21st century.
